What Is Color Paint Protection Film?

Color Paint Protection Film (abbreviated as Color PPF) is a new type of film with aesthetic appeal and protection for the vehicle.

In the past, car owners often faced a dilemma: color-changing films (vinyl wrap) met the need for personalized colors but lacked protection; clear PPF provided top-level paint protection but did not change the vehicle’s color. Color PPF solves this problem for your customers.

The WrapMasterPPF color PPF uses the same aliphatic TPU base material as the clear PPF while combining a five-layer precise composite structure. From top to bottom, it consists of a self-healing top coating, a colored TPU layer, a TPU base layer, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, and a release film. Each layer of material is independently selected and designed, and our factory has strict control. During the production process, the color is integrated into the film body to achieve “color change + protection” in one step for vehicle modifications.

Anti-Ultraviolet and Anti-Yellowing Properties

Combined with advanced UV inhibition technology, the aliphatic TPU substrate blocks up to 99% of ultraviolet rays. It can effectively prevent yellowing and discoloration of the film surface under sun exposure. After accelerated aging testing (QUV 5,000 hours), the B value is less than 5, and the color difference ΔE can be controlled within 1.5. This ensures that the colors remain bright and vivid for a long time.

Tensile Strength and Elongation

The tensile strength of WrapMasterPPF’s color PPF exceeds 25 MPa. This ensures that its surface can effectively resist stone impacts and maintain structural integrity. And its elongation at break exceeds 300%. So the surface can flexibly and smoothly wrap around complex curved surfaces such as the sharp corners of the front bumper, the arc of the rearview mirror, and the concave areas of the door handles, without rebounding or wrinkling after installation.

Original Paint Preservation

Our color PPF creates a physical barrier on the vehicle surface, completely blocking the paint surface threats encountered during daily driving. 

• High-speed flying stones impact (the TPU base material with a certain thickness absorbs the impact force);
• Door-opening collisions from other vehicles (the elastic buffer layer reduces the impact force);
• Bird droppings and insect acid corrosion (the anti-chemical coating isolates the corrosive substances).

Hydrophobic and Stain Resistance

The coating of our colorful PPF has excellent hydrophobic properties to create a self-cleaning effect similar to that of a lotus leaf. Water droplets form full water beads on the membrane surface, which naturally roll off as the vehicle moves or tilts, removing dust and stains at the same time. Rainwater, muddy water, and oil stains are difficult to adhere to, and you just need water to clean minor stains easily.

Self-Healing Surface

In traditional car paint surface maintenance, polishing is done to smooth out the oxide layer and minor scratches, while our color PPF surface coating has a thermally induced self-repairing function. You just need to expose it to sunlight at 40-60℃ or pour warm water at 50-60℃; the minor scratches will automatically recover to a smooth state under the influence of heat. This feature significantly reduces the annoyance of fine lines caused by daily car washing and minor wear and tear.

Adhesive Performance

We use high-performance acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive to achieve an ideal balance between initial adhesion and final adhesion. 

The initial adhesion is moderate to position and fine-tune during installation, so this can reduce the difficulty of construction and the rework rate. The final adhesion is reliable, with the peel strength exceeding 1.2 kg/inch after curing. The surface tightly adheres under extreme conditions such as high-temperature exposure, severe cold frost, and high-speed airflow, without peeling, bubbling, or falling off for a long time.

Passenger Cars

Our color PPF enables domestic cars to acquire dazzling new colors. With a thickness of 7.5 mil, it is capable of absorbing the minor impacts from the urban environment, such as door-opening collisions with other vehicles in parking lots, scratches from tree branches on the roadside, and debris kicked up by the front vehicle during high-speed driving.

Luxury and Exotic Cars

The original paint finishes of luxury cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Bentley are extremely costly. Even a single scratch or stone strike can result in a hefty repainting expense of tens of thousands of dollars, and it can significantly affect the vehicle’s resale value.

Our color PPF can achieve a high-gloss mirror-like effect with zero orange peel texture, perfectly matching the original factory paint finish. Your customers can boldly try special color schemes such as matte gray, satin black, or even electric blue. When they want to restore or resell, the workers simply remove the PPF, and the original paint surface remains as fresh as ever.

Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles usually feature streamlined bodies and large areas of smooth curves, requiring extremely high requirements for the stretchability and adhesion of the membrane surface. The WrapMasterPPF color PPF has a tensile elongation rate of over 300%, so it can be easily wrapped around complex curved surfaces such as the front bumper, rearview mirrors, and door handles without any warping or wrinkling.

Our color PPF can be flexibly combined to achieve a high-gloss black treatment for parts such as the roof, A-pillar, and tail wing, creating trendy effects like a floating roof.

SUVs and Off-Road Vehicles

SUVs and off-road vehicles often travel on gravel roads, muddy countryside, and bushy trails. Splattered gravel, protruding branches, and swirling mud all cause severe scratches to the side skirts, wheel arches, front facades, and engine covers of the vehicles.

Ordinary car wraps are prone to damage in such environments. But our color PPF, with its high impact resistance from the TPU base material and self-repair coating, can provide comprehensive protection for off-road vehicles.

Partial Vehicle Styling

• Roof blackening: Creates a floating effect similar to a panoramic sunroof, especially suitable for white or light-colored vehicles.

How to Choose the Suitable Color Paint Protection Film?

Select the Appropriate Color and Surface Finish

The color chart looks beautiful under indoor lighting, but it may not look the same when applied to the car. The curvature of the car body will affect the brightness, darkness, and saturation of the color.

• For dark-colored cars, use dark-colored films (such as black on black), and pay special attention to whether the blackness of the film surface is pure. 
• For light-colored cars, use bright-colored films (such as white on electric green), and you should focus on color differences. 
• Business/Executive Cars: Choose black, white, and dark gray first, as they are stable and error-free.
• Coupe/Performance Cars: You can try bright colors like yellow, orange, red, and matte metallic colors to highlight the lines.

Check Film Thickness

The film thickness directly determines the protective ability and installation difficulty:

• 6.5 mil: The protective ability is insufficient, unable to effectively absorb stone impact. It is prone to deterioration over time and loses its protective effect.
• 7.5 mil: This is the industry-recognized golden thickness. It can provide sufficient impact resistance and scratch resistance while maintaining good flexibility and extensibility. So it is easy to install and fit for workers.
• 8.5 or 10 mil: Although it is thicker, the construction difficulty increases significantly. When you are dealing with complex curved edges, such as folding corners and handles, it is prone to edge whipping or may be unable to fully fit.

When you are purchasing, please confirm the total thickness, including the release film and coating. 

Evaluate Adhesive Performance

Adhesives are the most easily overlooked and compromised part of color PPF production. Inferior adhesives (low-end acrylic or rubber adhesives) not only leave adhesive residue when removing the release film but also release unpleasant odors after being exposed to the sun during summer.

You can choose internationally renowned adhesive suppliers such as Ashland from the United States and 3M. WrapMasterPPF uses Ashland adhesive. High-quality adhesives have an appropriate initial adhesion force and feel dry and non-sticky (facilitating construction positioning); inferior adhesives stick to your fingers and are difficult to remove when pushed, easily causing ink marks.

Check Stretch and Conformability

The body of the vehicle is filled with arcs, corners, and depressions. Its surface with insufficient extensibility is prone to discoloration, whitening, and even cracking when stretched.

The elongation at break is the core indicator for measuring extensibility. The higher the value, the surface can be stretched without breaking, thus providing better coverage for irregular parts such as bumpers, door handles, and rearview mirrors.
